Over the weekend, I had a chance to visit with Korean Movie Director , producer, writer Shim Hyung Rae here in Korea, home to the Yonggu Art Entertainment Co. As we toured the Digital Production Studio located next to Kimpo Airport , I got a sense of what really happens behind the scenes during the post - production phase of a home - grown, Sci-Fi movie, to be distributed by a U.S.company . D-WAR props appeared everywhere and were used in several sequences of this sci-fi thriller five years in the making ( Note official start date as : 11/24/99)

Although I knew that Shim had a "reputation" that preceded him, I could not help but wonder if D-WAR was simply a "remake" of his previous movie aptly called REPTILIAN. After the first 5 minutes into the 25 minute preview of D-WAR however I KNEW that such conceptions I had of a boring "remake" was not only far fetched but a misnomer. The way CGI effects are mastered here made it clear that this director has come a long, long way from REPTILIAN, a very low grossing film perhaps stranger than fiction without any of the same elements you would expect from the genre of " fantasy " . Not only does Mr. Shim succeed in the use of a REAL PLOT but he casts real American ACTORS not to mention a compelling DRAMA that takes us back 500 years to a period of KOREAN history known as the Chosun Dynasty.

But the director's " message" is just as relevant as it works its way through to present-day L.A. Even Mr. Shim himself is convinced that he's no longer a "mediocre" film maker as he plys his trade as a creative tour-de-force in directing CGI films.

Will D-WAR defy any other description other than a "blockbuster"? That remains to be seen since the movie is set to be released sometime during the summer of 2006 , when we all get the chance to experience the absolute conquest of mankind by the legendary monster , IMOOGI. I did breathe a sigh of relief during this preview which I understood perfectly since its' all g-o-o-o-o-d and even spotted some familiar faces such as dreamy Jason Behr as the hero who must save L.A . from an army of ATROX soldiers who have trained "BULCO's " and "SHACONNEs" to serve them . ( DAWDLERs and other of Shim's characters add plenty of M.O. to the movie's monster carnage)

I figured most of the dismounted ATROX warriors , clad in heavy black amour were probably cheaper by the dozen to hire . But I later found out that these were not hired extras but life-size figures made from heavy metal and presently stored safely for future takes ! That was enough to convince me that there seemed to be a greater magnitude to this sci-fi flick than meets the eye .

There's even a computer animated newborn Baby that reminded me sooo much of the dancing baby used 8 years ago in the hit T.V. show Ally Mcbeal ! And isn't it true that cute baby supposedly started it all ? Go figure...

As we winded up the tour, the most pressing question in my mind was what becomes a legend most for Mr. Shim, a long time veteran in the film making business . The answer seemed to emanate from D-WAR which is his most ambitious project currently in post production : THE I-M-O-O-G-I of course ! That's a Korean word for a mythical creature that evolved over time and it's in D-WAR that the IMOOGI attempts to morph itself into a defiant dragon.

In closing, I'd rate D WAR a solid B+ for its exciting visuals and explosive scenes that keeps a pace all its own.

요번 주말에 난 감독 이자 프로듀서 이며 작가인 심형래를
영구아트의 본거지인 한국에서 만났다.

김포공항 옆에 있는 디지털 프로덕션 스튜디오를 구경하며
포스트 프로덕션 기간엔 어떤 일이 일어나는지 조금이 마나 알 수 있었다.

디워를 만드는데 쓰인 물품들이 곳 곳에서 보였고
그 중 많은 것들이 이 공상과학영화를 만드는 5년 동안 지속적으로 쓰였다.

난 심형래의 명성과 신용이 그를 존재하게 하는 것을 알았지만
디워가 용가리의 리메이크가 아닌지 의심이 들었다.

25분 예고편중 첫 5분이 지났을 때,
난 디워가 지루한 리메이크가 절대로 아닌 것을 알았고,
CG를 보며 심형래가 좋지 못했던 용가리로부터
아주 먼, 먼 길을 왔다는 것을 알았다.

뿐만 아니라 LA로 들어가며 보이는 감독에 메시지도 아주 적절하다.
CG 영화들을 열성적으로 찍으며 심 감독 자신 조차도
더 이상 자신이 2류가 아닌 것을 확신하고 있다.

디워를 블록버스터 대신 뜻하는 말이 있을까?
그 질문에 대한 답은 우리 모두가
이무기가 인간들을 정복하려고 하는 것을 볼 수 있는
2006년이 되야 알 수 있을 것 같다.

예고편을 보며 안도의 한숨을 쉬긴 했다,
왜냐면 영화가 정말 멋졌고 나의 눈에 익숙해 져있는
얼굴들도 볼 수 있었기 때문이다,
불코와 샤콘들을 사용하는 아트록스들로부터
LA를 구해야 하는 제이슨 베어처럼..
(심감독은 많은 캐릭터 <몬스터>들을 넣었다).  

어둡고 무거운 갑옷들을 입고 있던 아트록스들을 고용할 때는
돈이 별로 안 들었을 거라고 믿었지만
나중에서야 아트록스들은 고용된 엑스트라들이 아닌
나중에도 쓰일 철로 만들어진 실물 크기에 피규어 들이라는 것을 알았다.
그것만 봐도 난 이 공상과학영화가 눈의 보이는 것보다
훨씬 크다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

컴퓨터로 그려진 갓난 애기도 있는데,
그것은 8년전 티비에서 히트를 친
Ally Mcbeal에 나온 춤추는 애기를 너무 연상시켰다.
그 애기가 Ally Mcbeal을 히트 치게 만든 것은 다들 알고있는 사실이다.

스튜디오 구경이 거의 끝나가며 내가 가지고 있던 가장 큰 질문은
영화를 만드는데 노련가인 심감독의 전설은 무엇이 될까 라는 것이었다.
답은 심감독에 야망작인 디워에서 나온다. 답은 당연히 이무기이다.
이무기는 계속하여 진화하고 디워에선 용으로 변하려고 도전하는
한국의 전설적인 괴물이다.

마지막으로 나는 손에 땀을 쥐게 하는 비쥬얼과
폭발적인 장면들을 보여준 디워의 예고편에  B+를 준다.

- 공개되면 꼭 보고싶은 작품중 하나.. 그나저나 요즘 폭풍우 치는 밤에도 끌리는데, 그거나 보러갈까. 아무튼 심형래씨를 보면 정말 불굴의 의지를 가진 한국인이라는 인상이.. 정말 존경합니다. 심형래씨. 앞으로 조금만 더 화이팅!
